Submit a Story

Creating a good story takes time.

To start, find as many sources as you can to help you formulate your story. Consult the research page of this website for links to the many online resources available and for information on attending a research workshop.

You might be lucky enough to have your own archives (a person, letters, newspaper clippings, club minutes etc). Firsthand accounts such as these can really add life to your story.

You will need to give us a list of the names of all of your sources when you submit your story. We require this just in case we need to verify any of the information contained in your story. You will also need to make sure you have appropriate permission to use images, information, music, soundtracks etc. For example, if you have found an image in Trove and would like to use it with your story, you will need to gain the correct ‘permission to publish’ (note: permission to publish forms should specify content will be published on the website www.ww1.charlessturtremembers.com.au)

Writing your story

Whether you are submitting a story with words or via video, you need a plan. A good story has a clear purpose, and a beginning, middle and end.

Here are some other tips to help you along:

  • Tell a story not a list. While hard facts are the skeleton to a story, the purpose of this website is not to regurgitate lists of dot point facts. We aim to engage people in our history by presenting it in an interesting format.
  • What is the hook? We aim to collect 100s of stories over the course of the WWI centenary. What are you going to do to make yours stand out and keep people interested until the end?
  • Keep it short. Stories must be no more than 300 words, and videos limited to 5 minutes. This may mean you will need to leave stuff out. If you find yourself in this situation, give some thought to what the critical information is. Include this and leave the rest out.
  • One subject, one story. Because we want you to keep your stories short and readable don’t try to make your story do too much. Consider breaking your topic up across a number of stories.
  • Create a story for everyone. We want to engage lots of different type of people in this website. Your story will potentially be read/viewed by children and adults, all with differing levels of English language skills. You are welcome to submit a story in a language other than English, so long as you also include a translation so it can be enjoyed by all.
  • A picture tells a thousand words. It is possible for you to submit four Images along with your story. But make sure your images are of good quality. Images might be of people, of official documents, newspapers, locations. We can assist with scanning original images if you require. If you are submitting a video also consider how you can make it visually rich.
  • Make it relevant to Charles Sturt. One of the aims of this website is to grow understanding of what life was like in the Charles Sturt region during, and immediately following, 1914-18.
